Drone technology used against poaching

Rhino conservation is a complex and multifaceted industry, facing challenges such as managing large, remote, and inaccessible habitats and monitoring fence lines for possible intruders. Aerial patrols are done using helicopters or fixed wing airplanes, but this incurs unfeasible costs for many reserves.

Drone technology has provided reserve owners with an indispensable tool that can be deployed at any time-night or day-in response to a threat, to locate rhino and confirm their safety, to patrol for and deter poachers from entering reserves, essentially providing eyes in the sky for the boots on the ground.
Drones can be utilized to chase down suspects, to check fence lines, track the rhino, and support veterinary work on the ground. Having eyes in the sky when working in complex, wilderness terrain that has no road access affords a reserve the opportunity to ensure the safety of both the rhino and the team of people who dedicate themselves to protecting them.

Veterinary Conservation Coalition funded the purchase of multiple long-range batteries and a high-powered spotlight to allow a northern South African reserve to track and safeguard their rhino herd.  Anti-poaching efforts are the backbone of our mission while small reserves are the heart and soul.

Supporting Dedication

A donated drone was in need of additional batteries to increase flying time and long-range operations. We happily purchased additional batteries to give the dedicated reserve unlimited flying time to protect their wildlife. Add on a high-powered search light to guide the anti-poaching team where they are needed most and enable thorough searches of densely wooded and inaccessible areas at night?  Absolutely!

These are the projects Veterinary Conservation Coalition loves to do!  They might not be big, fancy, or newsworthy, but they mean the most to small reserve owners who commit their lives to protecting the endangered species we all stand to lose.
