Vulpro, established in 2007, is a non-profit organization focused exclusively on the conservation of vultures in Africa. With facilities in Hartbeespoort and the Eastern Cape, Vulpro operates across southern Africa, working to protect vulture populations and combat the various threats they face, such as poisoning, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. 

Diana added a visit to one of their facilities as a new activity on the conservation trip to South Africa.  A visit with injured, rehabbing, and captively bred vultures is guaranteed to change your mind as to whether scavengers are beautiful or not.  There’s something mesmerizing about witnessing a rehabilitating vulture with a previously broken wing heal so he can stretch his powerful wings to full capacity again.  There’s something inherently bewitching about seeing the hatched chicks from two captive cultures who could not be released back into the wild make a genetic contribution to the future of their species. 

Vulpro’s commitment to vulture conservation is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance in African ecosystems, as vultures play a vital role in preventing the spread of disease by efficiently scavenging carcasses. VulPro is internationally recognized for its pioneering approach to vulture conservation. Their work spans rehabilitation, conservation breeding, education, and research. By treating and releasing injured birds and enabling captive vultures to breed and return to the wild, VulPro is actively reversing the alarming decline of African vulture populations.

VulPro takes in injured vultures from across South Africa, offering them a second chance through a comprehensive rehabilitation program. Their efforts not only restore individual lives but also contribute to the survival of entire species.
